ART TUITION

FOUR CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE EACH WEEK, ALL TAUGHT PERSONALLY BY SUSAN ORPEN
Mondays 09h00 - 13h00
Wednesdays 09h00 – 13h00
Thursdays 09h00 – 13h00
Saturdays 13h30 – 17h00
Each of these classes accommodates beginners and more advanced painters, and is an on-going art experience rather than a fixed course. Each year however, the basic principles of painting and design are tackled in some form, and there is an emphasis on drawing at the beginning of the year.
Artists may choose their own medium, but are encouraged to try other media for specific projects during the year.
It is not necessary to wait for the beginning of the year to join a class.
Fees are R 750 per month, payable at the beginning of each month.
Single classes are available at R 200 per class
Classes are held at 196, Drift Boulevard (R114), Muldersdrift. (see map)

2021 CLASS PROGRAMME FOR WEEKLY CLASSES:
JANUARY: Exercises in TONE and FORM in charcoal and in your choice of medium
FEBRUARY: UNDERSTANDING IMPRESSIONISM: Short lectures on Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Adolph Jentsch. In your choice of medium, demonstrate your understanding of impressionist brushstrokes.
MARCH: THE PORTRAIT: The theory and methods of drawing the human face. Exercises in charcoal, and your choice of medium, culminating in a self-portrait.
APRIL: USING THE PALETTE KNIFE. We will attempt a large still-life in your choice of medium, using the palette knife only, paying special attention to colour mixing and knife effects. Watercolourists may step aside from this, unless they want to be brave and try watercolour with knives, sticks and teabags!
MAY: EMOTION/NARRATIVE/CONCEPT. Understanding these terms, and using them in your paintings. Short lecture on Expressionism and its influence on the history of art. You will create a painting which illustrates one of the above topics.
JUNE: THE SEATED FIGURE. Using a multicoured support, painting a figure of your choice (preferably a relation), in a medium of your choice.
JULY: TEXTURAL EXPERIMENTS. Using gesso on board or canvas or crinkled watercolour paper, we will use a wipe-away method in oil paint, or an add-on method in glazed watercolour and acrylic. Own choice of subject.
AUGUST: JUXTAPOSITON AND ANACHRONISM. Starting with several planning sketches, we will create a painting in your choice of medium, juxtaposing your own dog with a figure from 16th C Art. Collage may be used to create additional element of interest.
SEPTEMBER: MAKING A MASTERCOPY. Choosing a subject, identifying a technique, executing the work.
OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER will be set aside for work which develops from the programme, and for completing unfinished works.
Please note: This programme may seem daunting to beginners. I will give lots of help, however, and the challenges will improve your abilities quickly.
THERE WILL BE A VARIETY OF CANVASES AND PRIMED BOARDS IN VARIOUS SIZES AVAILABLE IN STUDIO IN 2021.
