ART TUITION

FOUR CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE EACH WEEK, ALL TAUGHT PERSONALLY BY SUSAN ORPEN

Mondays 09h00 - 13h00
Wednesdays 09h00 – 13h00
Thursdays 09h00 – 13h00
Saturdays 13h30 – 17h00

Each of these classes accommodates beginners and more advanced painters, and is an on-going art experience rather than a fixed course. Each year however, the basic principles of painting and design are tackled in some form, and there is an emphasis on drawing at the beginning of the year.

Artists may choose their own medium, but are encouraged to try other media for specific projects during the year.

It is not necessary to wait for the beginning of the year to join a class.

Fees are R650 per month, payable at the beginning of each month.

Classes are held at 196, Drift Boulevard (R114), Muldersdrift. (see map)

NB: Registered Students also enjoy FREE access to Susan's Online Watercolour Painting Course on Video in 10 Modules

Charges for Tuition at other locations:

I am prepared to travel to give workshops. My charges are negotiable.

JANUARY - ENERGY IN TO GET DRAMA OUT

We will work with the Still Life, referring to historical paintings from the Renaissance to Cubism. We will explore contour drawing, oil rubs, and breaking up the format. We will work with pencils, charcoal, oils and Koki Pens

FEBRUARY - THE BEAUTIFUL OPTION: WATERCOLOUR AND LINE

We will explore the capabilities of pencil, charcoal, ink, Jik, sticks, masking fluid and brushes to make linear marks. These we will combine with watercolour washes, pours and wet-in-wet techniques.

MARCH - AN INTRODUCTION TO PRINTING TECHNIQUES

We will discuss subject suitability, and the current popularity of prints, looking at prints from Rembrandt to Battiss. We will understand the difference between relief prints and intaglio prints by working with lino and by engraving on plastic plates, and we will learn inking techniques and how to operate the press.

APRIL - THE LIVE MODEL

There will be a two-hour live session each week; we will concentrate on proportion, gesture, line and shadow shapes, using a variety of media. For the balance of each class we will take the drawings further, discussing different ways of finishing the work and looking specifically at Ingres and Manet.

MAY - TONAL COMPETENCE

After looking at the tone scale available in the different media, and understanding chiairoscuro (ref. Caravaggio and Stubbs), we will work light to dark using pencil, and then watercolour; and we will work dark to light using charcoal, and then oil paint or acrylic. We will look specifically at tonal contrast as a means to achieve a strong focal point. Throughout the month we will sharpen our observation of shadow shapes.

JUNE – WHY UNDERPAINTING MATTERS

Various imprimatura will be practiced: dark, flat bright colour, squiggles of colour, oil rub, stencils, watercolour pours, cool or warm colours. All of these will be allowed to influence or show through the subsequent painting which will be in mixed media.

JULY – USING SOURCE MATERIAL IN YOUR PAINTINGS

The dos and don’ts of borrowing/pinching other artists’ work will be discussed. The assignment for this month will be to take a figure from a Matisse painting and put it into your own composition with or without other figures to set up a dialogue or concept for your own painting. Own choice of medium.

AUGUST – ANGELS IN COLLAGE

The theme for this month is ANGELS. After understanding what collage is, we will collect papers, found objects, photos, stencils etc. which may be suitable for the theme. We will then design our format and stick our pieces, working simultaneously with acrylic shapes and lines to unify the work.

SEPTEMBER - OIL GLAZE ON PAPER

We will choose classical subject matter from Michelangelo or Rubens, and make ink hatched-mass drawings. These will receive multiple transparent oil glazes in various different colours until the desired richness is achieved. We will work on four or five drawings simultaneously.

OCTOBER – SIMPLIFICATION AND DISTORTION OF THE HUMAN FORM

We will look specifically at Pontormo, Picasso, Villon and Jean Jansem. We will practise elongation, distortion and fragmentation of the form, and then create our own painting from a personal photograph. Own choice of medium.

NOVEMBER – AN OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLETE UNFINISHED WORK
